I believe the columns you are seeing are for the sametime awareness icon and the importance icon. if you are using the basic client then you prob. don't have the sametime awareness but since the mail template is designed to support both the basic and standard client features this is why the column is there. if you really don't want it you would need to go into the design of the mail file and remove "show sametime awareness" from the who column.
